Motomarathon announces 2010 calender
With the rest of the wacky winter months standing in the way of Spring and the open road, mental preparations are surely already taking up many motorcycle enthusiasts mostly waking moments.
A group of enthusiasts who have taken their own particular fascination with riding to an organized sport have announced a series of four day events.
Planning routes with as many twisties as possible, over four full days, the Motomarathon Association have four scheduled events for the upcoming year. Starting in late March in Southern California to Colorado in September the group has brought together events across the country.
"The Motomarathon Association sanctions an annual series of four-day rides over the best roads and most scenic routes in the nation, and now with organized sport-riding tours on both coasts," said founding Route Master John Metzger. "Routes remain secret until the night before each day's ride, then verified at day's end through self-recorded checkpoints using digital or cell phone cameras."
In 2006, Metzger celebrated 20 years of Pass Rides by organizing the Colorado Cinquantapassi which included 50 passes. Ducati North America CEO Michael Lock and moto-journalist extraordinaire Brian Catterson took part, who documented the Rocky Mountain adventure in his article, “The Accidental Tourist,” Motorcyclist Magazine, November ’06.
After a Ducati-sponsored junket to Italy for the Centopassi in 2007, Metzger and riding buddies Paul DiMarchi and Jon Simisky (former owners of Northern Colorado BMW-Ducati) created a fusion of past approaches to establish a new criteria set for a new sport: Motomarathon.
The schedule for 2010 so far includes;
- Southern California Motomarathon - March 26-29
- New England Motomarathon - May 13-16
- Centopassi Motomarathon - June 25-28
- Colorado Motomarathon - September 17-20
The format has struck a nerve with today's sport-touring riders as well as with the Motomarathon sponsors; Ducati North America, Aerostich and Wolfman, a well known name in luggage.
"With the new Multistrada 1200 debuting this spring we'll have a motorcycle that is a perfect fit for these events," said Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America. " We're proud to support the Motomarathon, and we're very excited to work with the promoters to elevate the highest form of sport-touring"
With two inaugural rides last season, only six riders completed all the checkpoints out of nearly 100 participants.
"With four events scheduled for 2010, it will be a challenge to nail every check," said Metzger. "This should result in a national champion to be crowned by the end of the year."
