Parking lots and impromptu practice for motorcycle skill sets

One of the key lessons taught in any motorcycle safety course is for riders to continue practicing after they have graduated.

While counter steering, stopping quickly and other basic maneuvers can be incorporated into day to day riding, the more complicated turning techniques usually require a large space and some orange cones. Until now.

A motorcycle enthusiast has come up with an easy way to have an impromptu practice in a small empty parking lot. Called the 'Parking Lot Slalom' the weaving run uses five marked parking spaces to practice the tight, controlled turning every rider should be comfortable with.

"I came up with this idea after watching a Police motors competition," explains Ryan, "I wanted to work on my low speed maneuvers, but didn't have any cones, so I came up with this. I think it would be a lot of fun if some other riders gave it a try."

Turning back and forth in between the parking spaces, the idea is to successfully navigate the makeshift course without touching the lines.

Wanting to add an element of fun, Ryan has thrown a challenge out to other riders; who can successfully complete the course in the quickest time. In the video below, he encourages riders to post their best time on the video hosting website Youtube with contributors noting their make, model and even year of motorcycle.

In the spirit of competition, any spills or glamorous drops of the motorcycle should also be posted.

But before riders run out to the nearest marked parking lot, there are a few precautions to note and take such as getting permission to use a private parking lot, check the area for loose gravel, glass, or oil left by parked cars. Taking a friend along helps to not only videotape your successes but also watch out for any traffic.
