Winning racing team sets landspeed records on an electric motorcycle
News 3 Sep 2010 | 7:03 amA team from the electric motorcycle racing circuit of TTXGP took their winning ways to the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats to set a new land speed record yesterday.
We would like to say the previous holders of the record were upset to lose it, but in fact that honor was owned by the same team that broke it on Thursday, who had set it only days earlier.
The most amazing fact to come from the new record set by Lightning Motorcycles was the preparation needed for the electric machine that reached speeds of 176 mph. Using a dynamometer to tune its General Motors EV1 electric car engine, the team reportedly made some gearing changes to allow for the higher speeds.
Other than the slight tweaks, the record-breaking electric motorcycle was the same winning bike which rode over the finish line at the inaugural TTXGP North American Championship two weeks ago.

Kawasaki rides out four new or updated on-road motorcycle models for 2010
Across its range, Kawasaki has brought new features and technological advances to four redesigned models.
While the company may be cost-cutting in sports sponsorships or auto show attendances, the research and development department were obviously allowed to keep their budget.
Many of the features can be found on other 2010 motorcycle marquees, but with the recent additions Kawasaki has ensured its loyal riders can enjoy the different luxuries and advances of the two-wheeled world.
Traction control systems, lighter materials and cutting-edge computerized systems all find their way onto the Japanese motorcycles built for on-road travel.
Looking to tempt the cruiser crowd with luxuries such as heated grips and a taller and wider electro-windscreen, the Concours 14 is Kawasaki's big bike meant for cross-country trips. A fuel economy assistance module that indicates favorable fuel consumption will give riders the opportunity to put more miles down before stopping for gas. The four-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC, four valve per cylinder, inline-four 1352cc engine is slowed with Kawasaki's ABS system.
This continent-crosser for 2010 also features tank bag hooks, outside air temp indicator, relocated mirrors and a electro-locking glove box. New bodywork promises better heat management and improved wind protection while the model's new suspension settings and Bridgestone BT 021 tires help to lighten handling.
Once the sportbike to be seen on, Kawasaki updates it's Ninja with technical improvements for improved throttle action, bolted on an upgraded transmission for smoother, more-precise shifting and added an upgraded Öhlins twin-tube 18-position adjustable steering damper. The sleek sports package is wrapped up in a revised bodywork that Team Green says offers aerodynamic improvements.
With color packages of Metallic Spark Black, Lime Green/Pearl Stardust White the 998 sportbike ZX-10R promises tremendous horsepower, delivered with refined controllability through the highly evolved aluminum frame rolling on top-shelf components developed on the track and refined for the street.
Staying with street performance and offering true sportbike handling with fairingless design, the Z1000 returns for 2010 as a completely updated bike with its new aluminum chassis, new 1043cc engine, new "horizontal" rear suspension and updated styling.
The new engine, a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve 1,043cc inline-four offers greater torque and a stronger top-end rush than previous Z1000 models. The crankshaft and transmission shafts are arranged in a straight line instead of a triangular layout, maintaining the design from the previous Z1000 continuing to offer what Kawasaki considers the best look for a naked model.
An aluminum backbone frame designed specifically for the Z1000, and similar in concept to the frame of the Ninja ZX-10R, allows a narrow construction that is easy to grip with the knees. Ergonomics have been upgraded, too, with a more comfortable seating position that offers a lower seat height than previous Z1000 Models.
Finally, a great lightweight all-arounder, the Versys for 2010 received upgraded bodywork featuring sharper styling, a revised, adjustable windscreen, revised passenger accommodations and new tie-down hooks under the tail section.
Following its debut just a couple of years ago, the world’s motorcycle press unanimously embraced the Versys’ unique combination of utility, versatility, affordability and just plain fun.
The 649cc four-stroke, liquid cooled, DOHC, four-valve per cylinder, parallel twin engine is calmed down with new rubber engine mounts and revised footpegs to transmit less vibration to the rider.
The new and updated models can be seen at Kawasaki's product rollout website featuring videos, pictures a dealer locator as well as the opportunity for riders to share their experiences.
