Ducati's Multistrada 1200 is belle of the ball at Italian motorcycle show

83ommThere were many notable introductions at the motorcycle show, EICMA taking place in Milan Italy over the last week or so. Whether for completely new models or redesigned favorites, motorcycle enthusiasts had plenty to talk about and even more to like.

It appears Ducati may have enjoyed the home team advantage in a poll taken at the show as it claimed the prize of best motorcycle at the show.

Ducati's Multistrada 1200 attracted  more than 20,000 votes in a survey carried out by Italian "Motociclismo" magazine. The new Multistrada 1200 took more than 48% of the votes, followed by the MV Agusta F4 and the Aprilia RSV4.

The prize giving took place at the end of the show, on the official Motolive stage (the area dedicated to EICMA's external events) in the presence of Dr. Costantino Ruggero, the General Director of EICMA, and Piero Bacchetti, President and CEO of the Edisport publishing group.

This was the final event at the end of an intense week that saw nearly 450,000 visitors fill the Halls of the Milano-Rho trade show district.

The Multistrada 1200 comes in a standard version with optional ABS, or in a higher-specification S model. The S is also split into two editions: Sport, with carbon fibre frontal air intakes, cambelt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors; and Touring, with a centre stand, panniers and heated grips.

The Multistrada is powered by the liquid-cooled 1,199cc engine off the 1,198 superbike, but with a new cylinder head that reduces valve overlap from 41° to 11° to soften power delivery and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This Testastretta 11° engine puts out 150bhp, a huge 40bhp more than the Multistrada's deadly rival - BMW's R1200GS, Italy's best-selling motorcycle.

The Multistrada S has a handlebar switch with four different modes. But instead of just power output via ride-by-wire, it also controls ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC), and the all-new Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES). All these come standard on the S model.

Ducati was quick to discuss its award, 'The award only emphasizes the public's enormous interest in the new jewel in the Borgo-Panigale crown, a further confirmation of the energy and resources that Ducati is dedicating to the constant development of new products,' the Italian motorcycle manufacturer wrote on their website.
