Motorcycle sales fell 13% for Honda but final quarter to improve numbers

The latest financial information from Honda shows motorcycle sales for 2009 fell just over 13% compared to the same period the year before.

In company figures released Wednesday morning, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer mentioned the Japanese and South American markets as a contributing factor for the fall of 13.3%.

97aHonda's fiscal year end is March 31st with the numbers released this morning representing sales figures for the company's third quarter which ended on December 31st, 2009.

As of December 2008 Honda Motorcycles had sold 8.1 million motorcycles with the company just breaking the 7 million mark for 2009.

But the Honda is positive about motorcycle sales, expecting the first few months of the new year to help finish their fiscal calendar. The company is projecting by the end of March motorcycle sales for Honda will settle at 9.5 million units, only 5.9% fewer that the year before.

Like many other automakers, Honda is also considering the public relations disaster being experienced by rival Toyota as an opportunity to increase its four-wheeled sales.

But across the globe, year-end figures are indicating that the challenging motorcycle sales may be leveling off, giving manufacturers worldwide a better outlook for 2010.
